PERSONAL INSURANCE
Renters Insurance
Your landlord protects the building, not everything you keep inside it. Renters insurance can help protect your belongings, provide liability coverage, and support you when a covered loss disrupts your home.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR COVERAGE
Protection for What Makes It Yours
Whether you rent an apartment, house, or condominium, renters insurance combines several types of coverage that may help protect your property and financial security.
What Renters Insurance May Cover
Personal Property - Furniture, clothing, electronics, kitchenware, and other belongings damaged or stolen following a covered loss.
Personal Liability - Certain claims involving injuries or property damage for which you or a covered household member is legally responsible.
Loss of Use - Additional living expenses when a covered loss makes your rental home temporarily uninhabitable.
Medical Payments - Limited medical expenses when a guest is injured in your rental home, regardless of fault.
Theft Away From Home - Certain belongings may remain covered when they are stolen from your vehicle, hotel room, or another location.
Replacement Cost Coverage - Optional coverage that may reimburse covered belongings based on replacement cost rather than depreciated value.
WHO NEEDS RENTERS INSURANCE
Coverage Wherever You Rent
Renters insurance may be required by your landlord, but even when it is optional, replacing your belongings or responding to a liability claim can be far more expensive than many renters expect.
Renters insurance may be appropriate if you live in:
An apartment or condominium
A rented house or townhome
Student housing
A long-term rental
A room within someone else’s home
Employer-provided housing
A senior or independent living community
Roommates are not always automatically covered by the same policy. Each renter should confirm who is insured and whether separate coverage is needed.
KNOWING THE LIMITS
Your Landlord’s Policy Doesn’t Protect Everything
A landlord’s insurance generally covers the building and the landlord’s property. It does not typically insure your belongings or provide personal liability protection for you.
Flooding - Damage caused by rising surface water generally requires separate flood insurance.
High-Value Property - Jewelry, art, collectibles, firearms, and certain electronics may have limited coverage without scheduling.
Business Property - Equipment, inventory, or liability associated with a home-based business may require separate coverage.
Certain Pet-Related Claims - Coverage may vary based on the animal, breed, claim history, and insurer.
Vehicle Damage - Renters insurance may cover certain belongings stolen from a vehicle, but it does not cover damage to the vehicle itself.
